Density of Breast Tissue not Associated with Increased Cancer Risk
In the past, it was thought that those women that had higher dense breast tissue would have an increased risk of cancer. This consideration is due to the fact that a typical mammogram might not be able to detect a potential tumor due to the breast tissue density.
A recent study done by the National Cancer Institute is showing that the higher density of breast tissue is not showing a higher risk of cancer, as compared to those with lower breast tissue density. This is good news for the forty percent of women who get mammograms and have high density breasts. The study included approximately 9,000 women that had breast cancer to determine if density played any important role in detection. The ten minute mammogram process remains the best screening for catching potential tumors and lower the risk of breast cancer.
