What are The Best Over the Counter Cold Remedies?

The common cold is one of the costliest problems of our society for the standard individual. Millions of dollars are lost every year due to sick and down time from the illness associated with the common cold. The ease of transmission and the mutation of the cold viruses make it the scourge of humanity with a high dollar sign attached to it. On the other side, it is a money making disorder, as so many manufacturers work diligently to offer products that will try to combat the cold. We are in a fast pace society we simply do not want to take the time out that’s required to get through and over a cold. So we are always in search of the answer to the question of: what are the best over the counter cold remedies?

What Are The Best Over The Counter Cold Remedies

The answer to that question depends on who you talk to and what your specific cold symptoms are. Doctors will tell you to take an antibiotic to keep a viral cold from turning into a bacterial infection. They will advise the common sense approaches of lots of fluids to keep your system hydrated, bed rest, healthy eating and to moisturize the air. Your physician may also advise you to use a saline spray to relieve nasal congestion. Depending upon your physical condition and age, you can take some of the over the counter products that are on the market. There are dangers and side effects for many of the over the counter products when used by older patients and children. Always consult with your physician or pediatrician before giving an older or child any medication. Some of the products can be dangerous, have drug interactions and can cause liver damage. If you are an adult and have heavy nasal and chest congestion and talk to a pharmacist, they will advise you that the newer mucus deleting product called Musinex would be a good over the counter medication for you. Always read the label and talk to your physician to make sure this is safe for you.

My grandmother was a great believer in natural and alternative medicines combined with common sense treatment. She always gave us chicken soup, which scientists have now discovered has anti-inflammatory properties as well as reducing the build up of mucus. Grandma also made sure we had healthy foods and added fresh garlic. We were also given Echinacea during all phases of our colds, from start to finish. Then there was the poultice that she made. It was a combination of some essential oils such as nutmeg and turpentine, mixed with Vicks vapor rub. She wrapped it on our chest and made sure that we had a top open enough to be able to breathe in the vapors. Of course, we smelled horribly, and that was just another reason for everyone to stay away.

What do you think about the standard remedies that are sold, such as the powders (to mix with hot water)? Do you think its better just to take completely natural products or do these medicines really have a lot of good things in them?
