Unrest in the Platinum Mines: should You Morally Invest?

The platinum mines in South Africa are some of the largest producing mines in the world and have a great following with lucrative results. The recent unrest in the South African mines has resulted in levels of violence that are making investors very nervous.

While much of the problem has been directed (or blamed) as politically motivated with the intention to pull-the-carpet out from under the Congress of South Africa Trade Unions, the situation as a whole is so bad that it brings the question to the forefront regarding moral investments.

Most businesses don’t take a moral stand on anything except the bottom line profitability, however, public opinion can make or break a company. If it is exposed that a company has invested in areas that have been proven violent or inhumane, the exposure can bring profits to a halt.
