Man has been Cured of HIV: 1st US News Conference: Is it Real?
A man residing in Berlin, Timothy Ray Brown, is setting up a foundation to pursue medical investigation on his own cure of HIV. Brown was diagnosed, taking HIV medication and when he was diagnosed with leukemia, his physicians searched for a bone marrow donor that had the genetic mutation that made an individual HIV resistant.
Brown received a bone marrow transplant from such an individual, but could not continue his HIV medication. Even without the medication, the HIV virus was not found in his body. While he still has leukemia and is under constant medical care, the discovery has been hailed as the first hope for an HIV/AIDS cure. Brown and the medical community are not recommending the same procedures for anyone suffering from HIV/AIDs, but the process has sparked a number of new research programs.
