How to Identify a Stroke

The problem with identifying a stroke is that the general symptoms could apply to many disorders. Dizziness and headaches, two major symptoms, could be indicative of many disorders. Below are a few essential steps everyone should know to identify whether someone is having a stroke.

How to Identify a Stroke

1) Ask the Person to Smile
By showing you their teeth you will be able to tell whether there is any weakness in the face. Someone experiencing a stroke will usually have numbness or weakness on one side of their body. If the person is having a hard time smiling on one side of their face this is a sign they are having a stroke.

2) Slurred Speech
Not only will a stroke victim have a difficult time understanding what you are saying, they will also find it difficult to speak. Slurred speech indicates trauma especially when it is accompanied by weakness in the face. Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence to check for slurred speech.

3) Unable to Raise Both Arms
Just as weakness effects one side of the face, it will usually also affect one side of the body. Ask the person to close their eyes and raise their arms. If they are unable to lift them to the same height that is an indication they are experiencing a stroke.

Each of these steps provides an important way to identify a stroke. Always call 9-1-1 right away and, if possible, gather all their medications and bring them to the hospital.
