How to Eat Right This Holiday Season

Every year it’s the same. You swear you won’t overdo it with the indulgent treats, yet when the new year rolls around, your fat pants feel like your skinny pants and your New Year’s resolution is, once again, to lose the extra weight—which you do just in time to start binging on holiday the next year. It’s a vicious cycle. But, never fear! We are going to give you some tips to help you enjoy this holiday season without gaining love handles in the process.

One good way to not eat too much at a holiday event is to eat … beforehand. We aren’t saying you need to eat a full-fledged meal complete with all the trimmings; however, we are saying that it is a good idea to eat something, so you aren’t completely starving by the time the party rolls around. You’ll eat less at the buffet, plus you’ll avoid that extra embarrassment of being caught eating the last five helpings of bacon-wrapped shrimp.

Another idea is to opt for the healthier pickings first. Try munching on that veggie tray before jumping to the cookies. You’ll fill yourself up with better calories, not the bad ones from starchy foods and sweets.

Also, make a conscious decision about which foods you want to try and which ones you don’t. Take the time to think about which foods you simply can’t do without and which ones you can. If you never really liked Grandma’s sweet potato pie, don’t eat it.

And for the love of all, don’t congregate by the buffet table. Standing next to a spread of cheeses, dips and meats is just asking for trouble.
Good luck, and happy holidays!
