Developmental Risks are Identified with Anesthesia for Kids
Parents have a new topic to consider when their children may have to be given anesthesia. Studies are showing that children under three that have been given anesthesia have a higher risk factor for developmental issues as they get older.
The study, published in Pediatrics, found that the children involved were twice as likely to experience developmental problems in speaking comprehension and listening, as compared to their counterparts. The study has taken into consideration the fact that it may not have been the anesthesia itself but the surgery or illness that caused the delays. The factors of behavior or motor skills were also tested, but these areas did not show any delay difficulties in any of the groups. It is difficult enough for a parent to have to have their child placed under anesthesia, now there is an additional possible stress to contend with.
