The skin care industry today is flooded with solutions to skin care needs. The market for products that give us healthier and younger looking skin is a multi-billion dollar business. Today our society is also more concerned than ever about using chemicals and manmade products. The market for natural solutions to everyday problems is gaining popularity at an astounding rate.

Vitamins of all sorts are known to help promote healthy skin. One of the most important vitamins for skin care is vitamin C.

Vitamin C, also known as L-ascorbic acid, is an essential ingredient in many skin care products. There are many products on the market that boast vitamin C as their main active ingredient, however, there are many forms of vitamin C, and if the product you are buying does not say specifically that it contains L-ascorbic acid, then it is not nearly as effective as a vitamin C skin care product. L-ascorbic acid is the only vitamin C derivative that stimulates the growth of collagen. Our own body’s ability to produce collagen decreases as we age, so a supplement that helps the body produce more is great when trying to combat the effects of aging.

Vitamin C skin products have many benefits. They are thought to play role in wrinkle reduction and reduction of lines that form around the eyes and mouth as we age. Vitamin C for skin helps the skin protect itself against the effects of the sun. This benefit is twofold. First it protects the skin from the sun, and then it helps repair the damage already done throughout your lifetime. However, it is important to note that vitamin C should not be used as a substitute for a good sun block with a high SPF.

The biggest problem with vitamin C when used for skin care is the instability of the vitamin, especially when exposed to air. When purchasing skin care products that contain vitamin C, it is important to take the expiration date seriously. Once the vitamin has oxidized it loses all of its beneficial effects. Not only does it not work once oxidized, it is thought to have detrimental effects on the skin by increasing the number of free radicals present. This is the main reason that you should not immediately buy into the ads for any product just because it says the product contains vitamin C. Some companies only care about their own bottom line and are not concerned with whether the products actually work. These companies are much more likely to sell products with vitamin C that has already oxidized and become ineffective. Buying products over the Internet is also a risky business, but it doesn’t have to be if you take reasonable precautions. Get to know who you are buying the product from and look for others who have tried the product and find out what their experience was with it. It is also important to find testimonials that are not provided to you by the seller.

Vitamin C, when used properly, is one of the best supplements you can use for skin care. As with any product, make sure you are getting a good deal, use the product wisely and with reasonable expectation.

Always make sure your product has the L-ascorbic acid. I've tried products without it and it simply does not work as well.
