Anti-antioxidants

Conflict is conversation, and conversation is the key. At Nutralegacy, we do our best to bring you the latest news, advice and editorials concerning a lifestyle. In the past, we’ve extolled the virtues of antioxidants alongside the rest of the health and wellness community. We stand behind those articles, but if and when news that challenges and/or elaborates on our information surfaces, we feel it our duty to report it just the same.

Recently, two scientists from the Netherlands’ Maastricht University authored a piece entitled “Ten Misconceptions About Antioxidants ” for Trends in Pharmacological Sciences. These researchers, AaltBast and Guido RMM Haenen, wrote, “For several decades, we have noticed that the antioxidant pendulum appears to swing vigorously from ‘only healthy’ to ‘extremely toxic’ and from ‘natural antioxidants are best’ to ‘antioxidants cannot act.’ The squabbling parties do not seem to listen to counter-arguments. Erroneous statements are not corrected, and thus the pendulum oscillates to the extremes.”

Bast and Haenen’s 10 misconceptions are listed below for your reference. To read more, check out KaceyCulliney’s article on www.nutraingredients.com

1) Antioxidants cure any disease
2) Antioxidants increase mortality
3) The more the better
4) At high doses, antioxidants become pro-oxidant
5) Any antioxidant will do
6) Theoretically, antioxidants cannot behave as such
7) Antioxidant status measures health
8) Once used, antioxidants are inactive
9) Natural antioxidants are superior
10) Antioxidant drugs do not work

If nothing else, let this serve as reminder that nothing is static – especially when it comes to science. The information, like the myriad of foods and supplements containing antioxidants, is available for your consumption. Now, you can decide for yourself.
