3 Most Lethal Prescription Drugs

For many of us, prescription medication is a daily part of our lives. While many drugs, when used appropriately, yield serious health benefits there are others that, even when taken responsibly, pose a serious health risk and can even be lethal.

3 Most Lethal Prescription Drugs

1) Prednisone/Cortisone
While Prednisone is highly effective for short-term use for ailments like poison ivy, long-term use can be lethal. It is often prescribed for chronic disorders such as Rheumatoid Arthritis. If this is the case ask your doctor about alternative treatments. Prednisone has been known to hypertension, ulcers, diabetes, and even internal bleeding. If you have been on Prednisone for an extended period of time make sure you slowly work yourself off the drug.

2) Coumadin
Sure blood thinners are important, especially for stroke and heart attack prevention, but they also pose a serious risk. Heavy and extended use of Coumadin inhibits blood clotting by weakening blood vessels which leads to heavy bleeding from even a minor cut or scrape. Often daily doses of Vitamins C and E can provide the same level of protection as prescription blood thinners.

3) Prozac
Extended use of anti-depressant drugs such as Prozac can cause agitation, hostility and worse depression. The re-uptake of serotonin in the brain leads to a condition called akathasia, or constant agitation. It is no wonder that when we read reports of students shooting up their school or attempting to take their life that they are often prescribed Prozac or other anti-depressants. The over prescription of anti-depressants is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Instead of focusing on diet and exercise, doctors are quick to whip out the prescription pad.
