When most of us think of kelp or seaweed, we probably don’t think: there’s something that can do great things for my health. What’s surprising, however, is that kelp extract can do a lot for your health. Research is showing that kelp is a great detoxifier and immunity booster, plus it can provide a range of other important health benefits, too.
Some Kelp Facts
Kelp is actually part of the brown algae family and grows in underwater forests. One of the most remarkable things about kelp is how fast it can grow. Some types can grow a half meter every single day. It normally grows in parts of the water that are between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. People have found all sorts of uses for kelp in the past, including fertilizer, dog food ingredient, thickening agent, even potentially as a fuel source.
Kelp as a Detoxifier
Studies continue to show that the ocean is home to some of the best filtering systems on earth. There are things below the surface that can breakdown chemicals, toxins, heavy metals, and more. Kelp, according to many studies, is one of these amazing detoxifiers in the oceans and seas around the world. If you use kelp extract, it can also help with the detoxification of your body which is going to contain many of the same harmful substances that end up in the oceans. Detoxification can help prevent health problems and can make you feel rejuvenated.
Kelp as an Immunity Booster
Another benefit of kelp and kelp extract is that it can improve the effectiveness of your immune system health. Studies have shown that doses of kelp have helped improve people’s immune response to a wide range of diseases. How it works is not clearly understood but it could be linked to the rich nutrient value found in the algae. Although it has nearly no calories, kelp more than 20% of the Vitamin K people need in their diets, as well as large percentages of almost every other nutrient. And one of the best ways to ensure good immune system health is by taking in all of the vitamins and minerals your body needs.
Other Benefit of Kelp
The high level of Vitamin K in kelp actually helps it provide other benefits, too. Research has shown that this vitamin can help prevent cancer and can reduce your risk of developing osteoporosis. It’s also important for blood clotting and for healthy liver function.
Kelp is also very high in iodine. It contains more than 200% the daily required amount so taking kelp extract can be a good replacement for salt, especially if you’re on a diet for high blood pressure and need to restrict your sodium intake. Iodine is essential for human health, too. It helps your thyroid function properly and prevents a serious disease known as goiter.
Kelp extract also contains large amounts of folic acid. Research shows that folic acid can be useful in preventing cardiovascular disease. Plus, the medical community has long known that folic acid deficiencies in pregnant women have caused an increased risk of birth defects in their babies.

Kelp has many wonderful benefits. However, be careful with the processed form as it may activate the thyroid hormones causing hyperthyroidism. Better to eat it in its natural form.January 31st, 2010 at 9:52 pm

Wow, I have to agree about not knowing how helpful kelp could be. I always viewed it as a distasteful version of spinach. This definitely opened my eyes!March 18th, 2009 at 8:21 pm

I had no idea kelp could do this! This may seem silly, but when I get seaweed soup and things like that, does that count as kelp?March 17th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
With colds running around due to the change in weather, thank you so much! I've been looking for a way to boost my immune system.March 17th, 2009 at 11:23 pm
I have an Oriental friend who makes a lot of food with kelp in it. If you can get used to the taste of the stuff, it's really a good addition to your meals. It's an acquired taste though, so the extract is a great alternative. Sorry... forgot to say great post - can't wait to read your next one!March 12th, 2009 at 8:50 am
